What Teachers are Saying:

"It has been more than fifteen years since I graduated college. Since that time I have drifted away from learning new things, until this course. I am renewed as far as technology is concerned. Thank You."

K-8 Component: The Science Matters Program

Impact: 16 school districts, 1,100 classes

Science Matters, launched in 1996, was designed to change the way science is taught and learned. The program provides nationally endorsed curriculum modules, teacher training, classroom follow-up, and kit refurbishment to support K-8 inquiry science. In a program evaluation conducted by the LRDC at the University of Pittsburgh, Science Matters fifth graders paralleled the performance of national and international seventh graders on challenging items. The program, housed at Washington & Jefferson College, has expanded its services to include curriculum audits and alignment, on-site customized training, K-12 Leadership Institutes and additional courses in content and pedagogy.

High School Component: Pitt Kits Program

The University of Pittsburgh program is designed to bridge the gap between the science community and K-12 teachers and students. This is accomplished by providing cutting-edge technology and developing new techniques for incorporating that technology into the classroom. After attending a 5-7 day workshop, participants are eligible to request Pitt Kits for classroom use. Teachers can request science kits containing all the materials, supplies, and equipment required to perform workshop protocols with their students. Additionally, a Resource Teacher from the IU1 Center for STEM Education can be scheduled to assist with the experiments.
