New Funding Received by the IU1 Center for STEM Education to Promote Algebra Readiness in Grades 3–8!
IU1 Center for STEM Education is thrilled to announce that, in partnership with Penn State Fayette and the Southwest PA STEM Network, it has received a three-year Math and Science Partnership Grant in the amount of $577,500 to promote Algebra readiness in grades 3–8. Funding from the grant will enable 60 teachers from Washington, Fayette, and Greene Counties to participate in an intensive two week summer math academy and school-year follow-up focused on the development of content knowledge, its application to classroom practice, and understanding of the role that mathematics plays in real world Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers for students.
Participating districts include Brownsville Area, Burgettstown Area, Carmichaels Area, Connellsville Area, Jefferson-Morgan, Ringgold, Washington, and Champion Christian.

STEM Program Highlights
Science Matters
- Over 1,100 kits shipped to 16 school districts
- Includes science, robotics, and engineering curricula elementary and middle school
- Professional development included for implementing teachers
Mathematics Support
- MSP Grant supports 55 teachers in 8 school districts with 120 hours of professional development annually
- Making Sense of Math content development series
- Math coaching provided at area Career and Technical Center and IU1 Alternative Schools
- 25 Western Area CTC teachers participating in Foundation of Math and College Algebra courses.
Summer Camps for Students
- Two locations for camps: W&J College and Penn State Fayette Campus
- Topics include programming with Alice, robotics, and rocketry
Pitt Kit Program
- Week-long summer professional development for high school biology teachers
- Classroom support via the mobile laboratory and staff from Pitt
Technology
- Math and science curriculum development for pre-K teachers in the Early Intervention Program
- Integration of SMART Table and SMART Board technologies.
CPE Courses and Workshops
- 37 course and workshops were offered
- 677 participating teachers

Defined STEM is a PDE-sponsored online tool that offers over 1,000 video-based learning connections to stimulate student interest in STEM career.
